A change was in the air
Grunge had been transported from its roots in Seattle to London and with it, a seismic change in fashion. Dolce & Gabbana aware of the huge style shift this was creating in fashion, music, and photography were inspired to design a collection that combined neo-classicism with a new pared down minimalism.
Rose printed chiffon in a nod to the trend for vintage dresses, masculine tailoring, cotton toiles and soft, distressed fabrics formed its foundation. The designers were careful not to lose their DNA amongst this new force, adding their signature Sicilian essence to soft, full length lace dresses made from the region’s lace and maintaining the powerful use of black and white.
Rosemary Ferguson, a young British model was chosen to feature in advertising campaign for the collection. She was captured by a young Mario Sorrenti in soulful poses that conveyed the innocence of the earlier Sicilian images yet with a very different type of beauty.
1994 was also the year the successful D&G line began. A collection that developed from the spontaneous combination of vintage, sportswear and tailored pieces.
