Hollywood Nails
It's my first time in North Carolina since August so I'm making the most of it.
Today I saw Linda, the only person who knows what my natural hair color is aka my Closest Friend. Linda met me when I didn't speak English, bonded with me over Sailor Moon, accompanied me through my "Punks Not Dead" phase and somehow still talks to me today.
It's been a year since we've seen each other so to celebrate my arrival she took me to a Nail Salon at the Mall (duh).
Girls get their 'Nails Did' together for the same reason lovers go to the Movies. It gives you something to do as a "couple" without demanding attention, conversation or intimacy.
Linda got a pedicure in the back while I got a manicure in the front, rendering us unable to even make eye contact. We exchanged our latest news via yelling at each other about school, ("I sold my books for shoe money"), boys ("too bad he's 16") and jobs ("my father has disowned me").
Just as I was bringing up my new Diet, I got interrupted.
"Have you chosen your color?"
I couldn't decide between Gaga or Ke$ha,
so I settled for Katy Perry.
I sat back in the sticky chair, inhaled the chemicals and begged my Cosmotologist to talk ("I wanna bond with you!").
Originally from Vietnam, Stacy grew up in Los Angeles and eventually
came to North Carolina, explaining,
"Los Angeles was too superficial for me. People only judge you for your outside
and don't respect you unless you're wearing designer clothes."
"I know," I say. "I can't wait to move there."
