Sicilian Girl: A night at the Theatre

Posted Nov 13, 2011

When I can, I love to go to Teatro Massimo to see an opera, a ballet or to listen to a concert. There is something inspiring, humbling and exciting about an evening at the theatre and the end of October seemed like the perfect opportunity.

Teatro Massimo is one of the biggest theatres in Europe and, of course, it has a legend behind it. To build the theatre, two churches and a convent were demolished: after that, a nun’s phantom called “monachella” started to haunt the grounds. And, if you don’t believe the legend, you’d better watch out, because you if you don’t pay attention to where you are going you could trip over “the nun’s step” while entering the theatre.

When I read on Facebook about an event called “Ghosts at Massimo”, I immediately contacted a friend who works there. I received a special invitation for the backstage, a concert and the mysterious event about ghosts.

I’ve never been backstage at the theatre and while I was looking for the dressing rooms to find my friend, two ghosts with eighteen-century clothes suddenly appeared, showing me the way. My friend was there, deathly pale but smiling “We’re gonna do a special flash mob with the nun’s ghost, Mozart music and a surprise at the end. See you on the theatre’s stair during the interval. Meanwhile, enjoy the concert”.

The foyer was haunted by several young ghost; one was sleeping, others dancing or looking at people from a windows, scary and funny at the same time.

The concert was amazing; the stunning music of Mozart combined with the magical location made the experience feel much more… alive, but the thought of seeing the flash mob was playing on my mind, what were they going to do? All I knew was that it was created to promote the next season ticket and to wet the appetite of the theatre goers.

During the break, twenty-something ghosts invaded the famous stairs of Teatro Massimo; a sleeping Mozart surrounded by his nightmares, an evil - but sparkling – presence, dramatic music and then... thunder. The nun’s ghost was there. They slowly grouped together and suddenly; they started to dance Thriller by Michael Jackson, infusing classics with contemporary.

Who said theatre is boring?
