Sicilian Girl: Shopping in Palermo's bohemian boutiques

Posted Oct 23, 2011

Shopping in Palermo is can be fun if you have a free afternoon, a friend and the will to walk around the city’s alleys. And, of course, a personal map, highlighted with the cool, alternative boutiques that are a hub of activity for young emerging talents.

Thanks to my blog, I’ve discovered lots of young designers whose items help give me that extra edge through originality. This is the reason why I always volunteer to buy something for a friend’s birthday. A couple of quick calls, my best friend arrives and, with no boyfriends around, we are ready to go. We know exactly where to go to buy an original, special present for a girl.

There’s a tiny shop where creativity thrives, which is actually more like a space for an artisan’s gallery, where you can find raku pottery, silk shirts or bijoux glass. Everything is handmade and in the workshop there is the possibility to see how bijoux glass is made. This place is always the first stop for my shopping needs.

A good number of designers and artists fall in love with Sicily (and us Sicilians, obviously) and decide to move here. If these new arrivals are smart, original, and creative, then Vuedù is the place to find their creations.

Vuedù is one of my favourite design stores; it is pretty, like the ones I love to visit in Berlin. Not only Sicilian designers are found here, but also stuff from all over Europe: interior design, accessories, books, clothes and hats (my addiction!). Vuedù is also a label of boiled wool created by Daniela; an architect, the owner of the space, a cool hunter and a woman that really loves her job, she is always pleased to tell you about every single item and every designer she invited to Vuedù.

Last time we went there, my friend and me fell in love with a silk flower-shape brooch, the matrioska bag and the pink studded clutch.

Shopping makes me lose all the sense of time: we went there to buy a brithday present and we left with multiple bags full of shopping… oops.

Each week Sicilian Girl will be giving us the chance to see more of the Sicilian way of life through her eyes and all you have to do is click below. Enjoy!
