A Friday Night With a Difference…

Posted Sep 12, 2011

Last Friday night I swapped my high heels for a pair of hightops and headed to San Siro to watch the opening match of this year’s Serie A, Milan-Lazio.

My Friday nights usually consist of cocktails and sequins with my girlfriends, but since I’ve moved to Milan, the home of fashion, but also the home of two internationally renowned footballs clubs I thought I may as well go to the stadium and see what all the fuss is about. Admittedly my understanding of football leaves something to be desired, but one can always learn.Of course, never one to do anything half way, I managed to blag a VIP ticket for the match, which also gave me access to the exclusive Dolce&Gabbana Gold lounge bar right next to the side lines. After all, it is Friday night and a girl needs to feel special.

The hospitality area of San Siro is as vast sprawl of lounges, a little bit like Dante’s Inferno; the closer you get to the pitch, the more exclusive the area and the hotter the guests.

The Dolce&Gabbana Gold lounge is everything you would expect of a marriage between football and fashion, sleek, elegant and packed full of WAGs. Clad in designer gear from head to toe, sporting their latest IT bags and teetering about in vertiginous heels, toned and tanned TV starlets and soubrettes greeted each other after the long summer break. Many of them displayed tell tale signs of little footballers on their way. While loitering I spotted Helena, Ibrahimovic’s wife was sporting an oversize blond bun and telling a fellow WAG how much she loved her newly acquired Dolce&Gabbana top from the foulard collection.

Famous ex footballers were also present, ex Milan player Paola Maldini was intently watching his ex teammates kicking off the season, while Christian Vieri was busy avoiding his ex girlfriend, Melissa Satta, who, for no apparent reason, apart from maybe bumping into her notorious ex, was also at the game. One of the cutest guests was Cassano’s 6-month-old baby sleeping soundly in his mother’s arms and wearing a mini Milan jersey.

Between star gazing, munching on finger sandwiches, drinking a few glasses of bubbly and polishing off a mini cannolo I managed to catch a glimpse of the match too, I was after all in a prime spot. The result was 2 all, which, I understand from Milan fans was a little disappointing. All in all, it was an enlightening experience, and next time I’ll be try to follow the match as to improve my knowledge of the beautiful game. All I need now is a handsome Italian football fan to explain the offside rule.
