Swide readers, this week I present you Jan Masny, a very talented photographer.
M:
Hi Jan, thank you so much for letting me to interview you on Swide. Let
me start of this interview with this question: what made you want to become a
fashion photographer?
J: I like freedom of creation, I like endless possibilities of expression myself. I do like fashion but I wouldn’t call myself fashion photographer. I really do like creativity in general. I like working with artists from different fields.
M:
I can see you are a very creative photographer when I look at your
works. Now, would you mind to tell me where do you usually get your inspirations
from?
J: I try to watch the world around me carefully. I love to spend time surrounded by nature. I do love mountains and ice climbing because these activities are very refreshing. They give me balance and set a distance from our normal routines. I’m having loads of ideas when I’m just taking photos of landscapes. Also, London is a very creative place where almost everyday, I’m able to meet someone amazing who I can collaborate with. Thousands of ideas appearing in the air when you are meeting the right people.
M:
I have to agree that when you meet the right group of people, your ideas will
start to flow. Well, what 3 adjectives will be best to describe your works?
Why?
J: simple- I’m trying to say very simply stories through my photography. When I’m doing photos I always think of how to simplify the final image.
powerful- simple stories needs strong themes.
creative –most of the time I’m trying to get unusual results. Something a bit different than the stuff people have seen before. I always try to find my own path.
M:
Your photos are definitely on my powerful and creative categories. So,
out of all the shoots you have done till now, which set can be used to best
represent you as a photographer? Why?
J: I don’t know. I really like this ballet shoot since the final images of this project all came out just like I imagined. At the same time, I like my black and white portraits of random people found on streets of Camden in London and also my landscape shots taken during my trip to the States.
M:
If I had to pick your best series, it would have to be the ballet one
since this is the series which has caught my eyes the most. Finally, if you
could shoot the promotion campaign for the up coming F/W 2011 Dolce &
Gabbana collection, what kind of imagery would you want to achieve?
J: I think I would try to connect fashion with reality.
I would like to take some of the photos in Japan in those places destroyed by tsunami, I would shoot the models working together with the Japanese rescue team by helping them to rebuild their country after tsunami.
I would do some of the shots by placing the models on the streets of Cairo just after revolution among protesters . I would like to show new hope, new freedom, new beginning.
Fashion always has its own language which is very far from normal life. However I think we can’t close our eyes for the reality now since reality will knock on our door sooner or later anyway......
