We're not saving lives...

Posted Aug 28, 2009

Back in fashion's chilly embrace, as fashionistas are already losing it at the thought of forthcoming fashion weeks, I remember what those anti-stress slogans really are..

After only a few weeks without competitive dieting, tantrums and heels, I'd forgotten the sure-fire ways in which fashionistas de-stress themselves. This is not of course the obvious - the heavy stuff is common knowledge, no I'm more interested in those little pyschological tricks that the fashion crowd play to rid themselves of stressful situations.

Imagine the scene, a colleague is backstage at a fashion show/reviewing a show/attempting to get a fashion editor to a show - all "stressful" situations in the world of fashion. If you listen closely however what you'll discover are the repetition of a number of key phrases that surprisingly don't involve the words spa, wine or changing profession.

Two fashionistas with serious expressions:

Fashionista 1, "What a nightmare..."

Fashionista 1, "Don't worry, we're not saving lives."

Two fashionistas with stressed expressions:

Fashionista 1, "F@!k, can't believe it!!!"

Fashionista 2, " Don't worry, we're not doing brain surgery."

Two fashionistas with hysterical expressions:

Fashionista 1, "aaaaauuuhhhhh!!!"

Fashionista 2, " Don't worry, we're not saving starving children."

These expressions, akin to your mum screaming, "clean your plate, there are starving Africans in the world", are said in wise tones, and never fail to work. They're usually followed by the stressed/hysterical/screaming fashionista continuing their work with the self-important air of someone who really is, saving lives...Go figure.
