The other runway

Posted Mar 16, 2009

A 5am start, 2 planes that refused to leave the runway and a booking reference that ended in D.I.E. Life at Heathrow really is like life pre-runway show.

Although no one usually actually spells out the letters D-I-E (my ominous flight booking ref ) during a runway show at Dolce & Gabbana - I've definitely received looks that pretty much equal the same words once or twice…irate bosses, staff, photographers and models not always being the friendliest of people in the heat of the backstage moment.

Like any pre-show/event/big meeting today’s 5am start at Heathrow airport was nothing new (perhaps only with the exception that this morning my 5am face has a weird bronzer stripe that I only noticed after checking in) - that was until I got on the plane.

After boarding plane No.1 and sitting for 40minutes, we were then shuttled to plane No.2 where we had an orange juice (without any champagne and fundamental fashion difference) where we sat for another hour only to be told we wouldn't be going anywhere and had to return again to plane No. 1?!!!

Unable to lash out at anyone other than a nice airhostess, the part that shocked me the most about the whole rubbish situation was HOW NICE everyone else was despite the constant delays.

Unlike the front row of a fashion show/ the red carpet/ backstage - there was absolutely NO shouting, catfights, throwing things on the floor or storming out (this I agree could have been difficult given the circumstances).

Is the world always-such a calm place or have I been backstage too long???
