The new regime

Posted Nov 20, 2008

The boss confuses regime with routine and we discover if Christmas is cancelled

By and large working in fashion is done for passion. One tends to hear the words supermodel, crystal, rich and guest-list far more than the words, pension, salary review and early night. We tend to have our own little routine - four catwalk shows a year interspersed with a healthy mix of VIP cocktail parties and star-studded launches and usually rely on a long Christmas and Summer break to get us through the rest of the year when taking time off is not an option.

This morning's review (in Italian obviously) was to discuss the rest of the year until Christmas - the only problem it would seem is that scarily no-one appeared to mentioned the world Christmas at all. Either the rest of the office is Jewish or Christmas is cancelled. I sneakily doubled checked the Italian translation during the morning espresso break - my dictionary confirming my suspicions that Christmas does in fact mean Natale in Italian and that neither word had been mentioned. In the end I was forced to raise my hand, " what happens on December 23rd...?"

"There is a new regime" my boss said ever so slightly scaring me with his new tyrant's vocabularly.

"Regime?" I knew he ran a tight ship - but cancelling the Christmas holidays seemed a bit much even for him.

"Regime?"

"Regime" he said, although this time he sneakily double checked his dictionary. "The ROUTINE before the party this year will be different."

"Oh, I said, but what about Christmas?"

"I'll be in Barbados on my blackberry, but I would prefer it if you didn't ask such personal questions during a meeting".

Lost in translation yet again. The only redeeming part of the day is that at least I have date of the Christmas party!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
