The invisible shopping rules

Posted Mar 11, 2009

As spring appears in Milan - the office has obviously already leaped forward to next winter. With certain individuals already announcing what's on their FW shopping list, my favourite pieces have been automatically taken out of reach.

To those not in the "know" you could assume that shopping only gets competitive when items go in-store - or at a push, when registering for a waiting list. Completely wrong my friends. The competitive process actually starts a lot earlier - in fact a whole six months earlier.

In an industry so avanti we eat our dinner for breakfast (chicken=protein=non-fat=thin) it is common knowledge that immediately after seeing next season's catwalk shows it's important to announce which items you "intend to buy". By announcing what "you intend to buy" this puts an invisible SOLD sticker on the item thus ensuring none of your other colleagues are allowed to buy this particular item (really).

Needless to say it's fighting talk and there's is nothing worse that someone higher up on the pecking order announcing they also want the silk pleated skirt. In a flash - you're ruled out of the game, and left with the identical same smart trouser suit you bought last season.
