The cool off: Design v fashion
Who'd have thought that without a laminate (a backstage pass to those fashion civilians), the Milanese streets could offer so much fun, and it isn't even menswear fashion week. The obvious attractions aside (see my snapshot), I thought I'd take a minute to decide who in fact is the coolest crowd. Introducing...
FASHION v DESIGN?? WHO WINS THE COOL TIARA?
In the spirit of the X-Factor (I'm nothing but cultured) - read my observations below and then YOU DECIDE who wins.
1.
As mentioned above, a fashion person's dream is to appear on The Sartorialist. A design person would rather have their egg-cup featured.
2.
Fashion week talk - "this season it's all about the reinvention of a shirt button". Design week talk - " this season we've re-invented a table with 5 legs"
3.
The fashion crowd buy magazines primarily to look at the pictures. The design crowd buy magazines primarily to look at fonts.
4.
The fashion crowd can't walk (it's impossible to leave the hotel without a driver). The design crowd can't walk (it's impossible to leave the hotel without a fold-up prototype cycle).
5.
The fashion crowd go to an opening to eat for free and to get drunk. The design crowd actually end an evening by going for dinner???
6.
No-one has 'laminate envy' during design week and backstage doens't exist :-(
7.
During design week we kind of miss the drama of scary P.R's hissing " YOU MUST TAKE YOUR SEAT IN 5 MINS BECAUSE THE SHOW IS STARTING NOOOOOOWW!!" (screamed at high volume and missing the polite chip).
8.
During design week - children are often SEEN on the city's streets and with their professional parents. During fashion week children are put away in cupboards and considered an alien species.
9.
Fashion people like to dance to 80's music and consider it an ironic statement. Design people don't dance and consider it an ironic statement.
10.
(Could this be the clincher??)
During fashion week, the fashion crowd get lots of free things to ensure they get out of bed and watch an entire 12 minutes of models walking on a catwalk. During design week the design crowd get out of bed because they really want to see a new jug.
