The Dolce & Gabbana heist

Posted Nov 12, 2008

A stealing affair!! Our new office is ROBBED but a chain of post-its may save the day!!!

If you've ever contemplated upping sticks and moving to Italy, or what life may be like inside a Milanese fashion brand, take a peek at Behind The Seams - a daily blog about life working for Mr.D & Mr.G.

So, picture the scene - hurrying into work with my usual fifteen minute delay. I get out of the lift adopting my very busy pose - i.e. phone glued to ear of imaginary person (got that little trick from Paris Hilton) only to be greeted by the very solemn faces of my co-workers.

Unsure of what was happening I continued the phone call with my imaginary and very important person, hoping I had actually emailed everything that I was supposed to do last night. Just as I was about to walk over to my desk - my colleague screamed in manner of C.S.I detective, "DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING". I looked up and before my shaded eyes (next season's) discovered our NEW office that we moved into YESTERDAY had been robbed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr.G's brother was luckily already on the scene -directing the confusion and assuring us the police were on the way - thank-god I wasn't the last in the office last night that's all I can say (not that this has ever actually happened of course, but the thought was there). I'm not sure my Italian is up to an alibi. Anyway - it turns out my personal laptop had been stolen along with a rucksack I bought on a school trip when I was fourteen (??) plus the beloved Dolce & Gabbana microphone !!!! The very one my future husband David Gandy so loving commented on.

The police or caribineri as we say around here arrived and we proceeded to give a list of what had personally gone missing along with obviously several million euros worth of DG P.C's, videocameras, blackberry's...My turn arrived and I was obviously slightly embarrassed having to give a list of personal contents in Italian, and in front of Mr.G's brother and the hero of the hour.

"Rucksack, zaino" I said. "Marchio?" - what brand? At this point obviously I had no intention of explaining I had bought it when I was fourteen and on a school trip...in front of everyone else who had lost Prada pouches, Hermes pencil cases, Dolce & Gabbana handbags and Tiffany paperclips. In the end I muttered, "brown leather" and that I'd forgotten where I'd bought it - hoping I would appear superior to all this other label talk (??)! Someone actually added how cute it was I used a rucksack. I CYCLE, I say to you all - you try balancing a laptop in a French style wicker basket when it rains!!! Status envy in the police queue!!!!!!!!!

After I declared my laptop missing I then moved on to the microphone, which the police man really didn't get until Mr.G's uncle kindly stepped into to explain that it had Dolce & Gabbana wrapped around it and therefore was invaluable - expect it on ebay anyday now...

In the midst of the hysteria and my very important declaration of goods - my boss called to ask why we had left the office in such a mess this morning!! I swear he never sleeps - turns out he had already been in the office at 8.30am this morning and was so disgusted by the state of the office he had walked out! We had to calm him down by explaining there had in fact been a burglary...After several espresso's - the news filtered in that a trail of post-it notes had been found downstairs (I'm praying they're not the ones from my P.C reminding me to pay the rent/work/book my Christmas flight!!) and that the police are using them as key evidence to locate the getaway trail. Can you imagine my post-its being used as EVIDENCE in a court. So young lady... "exhibit b- pay rent", "exhibit c - get leg wax"...oh the glamour of my life.
