The David Gandy & David Beckham match

Posted Jan 20, 2009

Imagine the scene - Saturday evening and a football match. Nothing to get too excited about you may think - that is however until the two Davids are mentioned in the same sentence.

Now, it's obvious before I even go any further that I don't take an avid (or any) interest in football. Not my thing and it's too cold. So the initial thought of going to see a football match on a Saturday night, after working all day (if you call interviewing male models working), but still, I'd been in my heels all day and my make-up was starting to shine was definitely not an appealing one. For professional reasons I was about to suggest - the match would be of no interest- but THANKFULLY was stopped in my tracks by the mention of the names David Gandy and David Beckham - one was playing and the other was watching. Lucky? Moi?

WHERE TO LOOK was my immediate thought closely followed by how I could get the seat next to David on the bus? So, making a very quick u-turn, and after telling the office that I refuse to let little things such as the cold and tiredness get in the way of one's career, off I ran to board the Dolce & Gabbana schoolbus that was transporting us all to the San Siro stadium. I have to say there was something very funny about seeing the company's A-list, celebrities and top fashion press sitting together on a bus with its neon lighting and all without a seating plan (in this industry NOTHING is ever done without a seating plan, so believe me, this was a very rare and random moment unlikely to be repeated anytime soon). I spotted couples I'd never thought see chatting believe me...

Sadly my colleague and camerman had already nabbed the seat next to David!!! The worst of it being my colleague doesn't speak a word of English! Despite my jealously (oh, the wasted opportunity!!!) it was most amusing to watch the cameraman smile at everything that David said in a manner exactly like I'd done (and was ridiculed for) a few hours earlier at the show or frantically text me on how to say various football terms in English. Needless to say I didn't save the day, but what I will say is, if champagne, a private box, David Gandy and David Beckham could be provided at every football match - I could see definitely see myself developing a interest in football, I really could.
