High maintenance in an empty city
If you've ever contemplated upping sticks and moving to Italy, or what life may be like inside a Milanese fashion brand, take a peek at Behind The Seams - a daily blog about life working for Mr.D & Mr.G.
Going to the office is obviously straightforward - get up, drink lots of coffee, pick one of many carefully selected black outfits, tie hair in sleek ponytail, add heels and a taxi and there you go. Weekends however are when the real maintenance happens - and we're not talking fitness. Saturdays are religious in the sense this is when the beauty regime swings into action and the mistakes of the week are attempted to be erased.
In order to face the DG boardroom with the rest of the chic woman - Saturday involves manicures, regular facials, blow-drys, steaming and a trip to Zara. Usually due to my very busy work routine in reliance of my kind, kind (and I expect rather richer now Iive in the same street) profumeria to fit me in without an apointment - I tend to get a way with it my a) being a foreigner and b) paying inflated prices.
Anyway, Saturday I get up bright and very unbreezy, have a cappucino in the cafe on the corner, followed by another in a different bar - I am too embarrased to order two in the same bar and no-one in Milan apears to do so. I actually suspect if I ask for another they might actually refuse. Anyway - so the first thought something may be amiss was my usual "second bar" wasn't open - as I'm used to walking the streets when no-one else is about - I hadn't actually noticed the streets were empty or more to the point deserted - ignoring the fact on I went to find my usual perfumed and welcoming beauty shop - closed.
Not only was it closed - but the shutters were down in way that meant - no-one is opening today or at all this weekend plus a big sign explained that due to the holiday Saturday they would be closed. WHO CLOSES ON A SATURDAY???
Needless to say I face a week of being unable to face meetings in my unplucked/unmanicured and distinctly limp state. All I hope is that Mr.G is away on business and all meetings next week might be cancelled next week due to severe shortages of mineral water or the like.
