Hello Dolce & Gabbana...
In England using the word ciao automatically ensures you're labelled as pretentious/affected/or a sherry drinker. Here in Milan of course it’s a whole different story and I’ll happily admit to taking a perverse pleasure in answering the phone with a faux-Italian accent.
Today however even my Italian secretary act (every day it’s a new Italian diva – today was Sophia Loren) was magnificently shown-up with the arrival of my boss celebrating his birthday.
Simultaneously managing two different cell phones and a blackberry he took a call at the rate of one a minute from 9-11am. Despite knocking back the espresso the constant celebratory calls eventually got the better of him and he surrendered to the off button before lunch. This being extremely RARE behaviour usually only exhibited when someone is hospitalized - we spent the afternoon wondering whether sending him a letter by courier would appear desperate.
