Footloose and footwear free

Posted Sep 24, 2008

I finally get backstage access but without being able to walk worry it may be in vain

Apart from the obvious pain of my twisted ankle the agony of not having appropriate footwear for tomorrow's Dolce show is causing me more anguish. With no time for tea & sympathy – there is a show to prepare for and I have BACKSTAGE & CELEBRITY ACCESS!!!!!!!!!! I make a mad dash to Rinascente (Milan’s dept store du jour) where I find an array of six-inch stilettos that ordinarily would appeal if I had a full-time driver and a working ankle, but given my new bandage accessory I had to instead try for a mad dash in Zara that believe me is not pleasant during fashion week (ever?).

When I have muse status this foraging will be finished for good, believe me. The store as usual was ransacked with the usual mix of fashion assistants salvaging alongside catwalk models for something resembling next season. Found a horrendous pair of pumps that I was forced to buy in fear of not being able to walk tomorrow and successfully reached my credit card limit, thereby rendering my penniless for the remainder of the week.

To make-up for the loss of glamour factor, I decided to sensibly use the remainder of my cash to taxi to the launch of the Wall Street Journal’s new magazine. Everyone was dressed entirely in black (and definitely not Zara) apart from a mad elderly Russian man who I befriended, and who had the best business card I’ve ever seen. It listed his occupation as “fashion, architecture and basketball”, no need to inquire further after that kind of introduction. Limped home after three vinos and a canapé supper (risotto…) and prayed for my ankle (and bank balance) before hopping into bed.
