Absolutely flawed
So there I was, running for the lift, not particularly easy when the floor is black marble. Monday morning and the usual drama of what to wear. I love fashion don’t get me wrong, but a Monday morning is the only time when a pair of Uggs and a tracksuit seems appealing. As I work for Dolce&Gabbana in Milan (and I’ll check what I’m about to say and get back to you) however I think turning up in said attire could well be a firing offence, or at the very least demotion-worthy.
Anyway, as is with all my sartorial emergencies of this nature, I throw on a very imaginative outfit consisting of a black dress, black shoes, and, (spot the theme) a black scarf. Yes, it is may be June and it may be thirty degrees but what is air-con for if you can’t flaunt the pre-collections in the peak of summer? Its rumoured another designer of a very famous nature actually turns up the air-con on his yacht for this sole purpose. A man after my own heart.
Running for the door I shoved a tweed cap over my hair that is still clinging to last week's blow-dry. Tweed it may be said is a winter fabric, but as fashion lives in a micro climate of its own - winter in summer etc.. (and perhaps the first to truely embrace the effects of global warming), I was confident it wouldn’t look (too) out of place.
A nod in the direction of the receptionists (very powerful people in times of need…) the lift doors opened (without so much of a ping), and I run (no exaggeration) straight into the arms of Mr. G. Firstly, (avoiding embarrassing questions first) are lifts smaller in Italy??? I don’t remember ever falling into anyone’s arms in an English lift (during work hours obviously) and b) why do people insist on mirrors in lifts? As if being in a lift wasn’t uncomfortable enough.
Having worked for six months at Dolce&Gabbana, "the Mr.’s" have always remained an urban myth – until now. A glance in the lift mirror and my nonchalant cap screamed fashion victim.
So... I did what any normal employee would not do in the situation - I became completely mute. The lift doors opened.
“Buongiorno”.
Mr. G left.
The doors closed.
