Norah Jones: 3 Dreams Of Black.

Posted May 23, 2011

Have you ever wished that you could share your dreams? Project Rome may be the answer...

This month has seen the launch of a project by super producer Dangermouse, Italian composer Daniele Luppi and singer Norah Jones, which allows you to share your dreams. But before I discuss that I want you to consider how we, as humans, interact with technology on a daily basis. Our personal technologies are becoming increasingly interactive and the use of touch screen is becoming second nature to us. As the demand for innovation within the entertainment business continues to heat up and the battle against music piracy pushes on, music artists are finding ways to keep the audience hooked on what they do. This leads me on to the ever faithful music video and how the introduction of new computer technologies is changing the way we view them. Yes, I am aware that music videos are, on some level, already interactive and the use of the audience has been utilised before through different means; voting for the video content, submitting video clips, designing the costumes etc. Now musicians are offering the chance for the public to interact on a new level… in real time using WebGL and HTML 5, the building blocks of a webpage.

So, this year we are presented with a fascinating project that is being conducted by Dangermouse, Daniele Luppi and singer Norah Jones called ROME "3 Dreams Of Black". What makes this project even more interesting is that the interactive film, that has been created by Chris Milk, was designed for the web browser using HTML5 and WebGL. HTML5 allows a user to edit and create in-browser content without the use of plugins. Google have used this platform and combined it with WebGL. The following link explains in simple detail the use of WebGL.

Webgl Rome Project.

The project that Norah Jones is taking part in is one of the first fully interactional videos and allows you to view the video from different angles and to alter the action with the move of the mouse. It guides you through 3 dreams each with interactive elements and the result is mesmerizing, the style of the imagery is beautiful and you are accompanied through these dreams by the song "Black". The user is then presented with the option to share their dreams in an interactive in-browser creative environment where anything can be made (a house, a car, a huge sandwich filled with ham etc) that can be submitted and included in the actual video that other users will see and have a chance to interact with.

I'm sure you'll agree with me that this technology is hugely exciting and one that I am going to follow closely as it grows in potential. Who would you like to see using this style of video?
