Music take 2! Swide's New Summer Sounds

Posted Jul 7, 2011

Last week Swide presented you with the Classic sounds of Summer, this week we’ll be introducing you to some artists who are bringing the noise this year and some old tunes with a new twist.

As you can hear the first track is enticing you with sun kissed, beach ready beats that should be shared with friends. Let me introduce you to a track by Washed Out called ‘Amor Fati’, which can be found on his upcoming 2011 LP release ‘Within and Without.’  Now press pause when you are done listening to Washed Out and let’s continue.

Next up with have a song that was released in March this year by Yelle called “Safari Disco Club”, a unashamedly upbeat, electro, French tune that teases a smile on to your face and a shake in your derriere before you know it.

Now we have Foster The People with “Helena Beat”, a track that builds quickly into an indie-electro, hands in the air, indie dance moves track.  Foster The People created remix havoc with their single ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ and I have a feeling that this is going to receive similar attention. Listen and learn.

A summery shuffle is next for your listening pleasure from Bombay Bicycle Club who dare you to listen to this and not think of barbeques and beers. BBC are not new to the scene but this release for 2011 sees them using a piano led formula heard on their track ‘Ivy & Gold’. A nice little foot tapper that is perfect for a sing-a-long, I present 'Shuffle.'

Taking things a little darker but, wow, does this band make you sit up and pay attention. Taken from their album ‘Go Tell Fire To The Mountain’, this band has created a buzz about them without even creating a buzz themselves. They have declined requests for interviews, released little information and it is even difficult to distinguish who is singing and, sometimes, what they are saying. One of my favourite debuts this year.

After that let me smack you in the face with a song from an X Factor lady named Cher Llyod. She impressed the viewers of the worldwide hit T.V program format and has returned with this hater silencing anthem for the summer. It is cheesy, cheeky, young and will make you nodding your head by the last 25 seconds. Trust me.

Dusting off the old and injecting it with some remix love is how Monsieur Adi approached Madonna’s ‘Frozen’ and… worlds fail me. Just click play.

I have always been a fan of the following band, Beirut, and this year sees the release of their new LP and I want to share the first release off it from June ‘East Harlem.’ It is the perfect accompaniment for a chilled out drive along the coast or a Sunday afternoon in the sun. Enjoy

Keeping it chilled and easy I bring you Wye Oak, from The USA, and the title track from their album Civilian that was released in March this year. Made up of only Jenn Wasner (vocals and guitar) and Andy Stack (drums, keyboard and backup vocals) they create a blur of modern folk and 90s indie rock sensibilities and it works! Check them out below.

To end Swide’s summer song selection I leave you with another remix, this time by Captain Cuts of a Group Love’s ‘Colours’, which was well received after its release earlier this year. This rework doesn’t lose any of the original’s magic but gives it a warmer edge and one that will help be the start to any party.

So there you have it. Swide’s summer selections and like the classic selection, this list can be mixed and matched to your hearts content and played as loud or as quiet as you want. Enjoy.

Oh, who am I kidding… let’s end this on one more blatant summer stomper. Click below.
