The real reality show

Posted Oct 26, 2008

Patti Smith once said, “Besides me wanting to be an artist, I wanted to be a movie star.”Well, now she is. This autumn, Palm Pictures, (founded by Island Records innovator Chris Blackwell) releases Steven Sebring’s directorial debut, Patti Smith: Dream of Life.

The film has already won the Cinematography Award when it premiered at the 2008 Sundance Festival and has been hailed as, “a joy for anyone interested in pop culture of the past 40 years” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sebring, already an acclaimed photographer, first met Patti in 1996 and upon seeing her perform asked if he could film her. She agreed, and eleven years later the film, narrated by Smith herself realises her dream of being a celluloid star. A book from Rizzoli will also accompany the film’s release – including private transcripts and never-before-published Polaroid’s of the punk star.

And so what next, aside from the obvious rush on Patti inspired fashion this autumn?

Having one dream become reality is more than enough for most, but we can’t help but think with Princess Patti there is more on the way. Intrigued at what might come next for the first lady of darkness we did a little research.

Apparently, Smith also, “...dreamed of being an opera singer, simply because of Maria Callas.”

Patti, live at The Scala? This, we’d love to see.
