The dark streets singer

Posted Dec 2, 2008

Imelda May is a Dublin born singer with a raw talent and timeless glamour. A true performer with a sassy burlesque fusion of jazz, rock and blues her voice is set to star in the new Moulin Rouge film - "Dark Streets" out on December 12th.

Imelda May's new seductive album, "Love Tattoo" has put her on the music map - emerging as as one of the finest vocalists from the UK Roots music scene. Inspired by such Jazz greats as Billy Holiday, Dinah Washington, and the undisputed queen of rockabilly, Wanda Jackson, Imelda is forging a contemporary sound all of her own.

Imelda's voice will also feature in "Dark Streets" - a new film noir based on a musical, that premiers on December 12th. The movie set against a 1930's backdrop,  stars Bijou Phillips and Gabriel Mann, and tells the story of a blues club owner, a seductive chanteuse and the club's star singer, Crystal.

Its star-studded soundtrack features original songs performed by Etta James, Natalie Cole, Dr. John, Aaron Neville, Solomon Burke, Richie Sambora and Imelda May, and as such, its producers will donate fifty-percent of the film's profits to The Blues Initiative - a non-profit organization which directly aids musicians and contributes to the revival of the cultural and music arts in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricanes' Gustav and Katrina.
