The Lost Fingers live in New York

Posted Apr 24, 2009

Quebec's latest music sensation - The Lost Fingers opted for a full scale Canadian invasion of New York City this week, resulting in the tourism elite descending upon Gotham to spread the message of the wonders and glories of the North.

With all the usual cynicism and despondency clouding the NYC air, The Lost Fingers show at the unceasingly cool Joe’s Pub was a genuinely welcome hour of pure revelry.

Their terribly clever debut, Lost in the 80s (Sony Canada), mates skillfully crafted 1930’s gypsy jazz stylings with a slightly snarky but mostly sincere love of 80’s pop.

At Joe’s, smartly attired in matching pink shirts and silver ties and with just two acoustic guitars and standup bass (so much for the techno revolution), they tore through some wicked Django Reinhardt style grooves. Amazingly, the usually jaded music cognoscenti went mad for their urbane, feverish covers of classics from “Tainted Love” to “Careless Whisper”, with their utterly madcap version of Technotronic’s “Pump Up The Jam” closing the night in riotous fashion.

Postmodern irony, thankfully, had been turned away at the door.
