So good it hurts: the most talked about band of 2010

Posted Jan 12, 2010

Hurts: British, self-admittedly obsessed with pop, with more than an air of 80's band to them; it might all feel a little déjà-vu yet they have been deemed by most one of the next big things of 2010. Swide listens in on the future of nostalgia.

Pardon the cheap pun but these Mancunions are very good indeed! And while they have been around for a while and their growing success is no surprise to any music insider there definitely is a growing buzz at the moment.

The 2010 Hurts Odyssey: Wonderful Life is how it all started a few months back (here in its popular remixed version).

Not just another bunch of sharply-dressed skinny blokes then! Sharp and lean they are but these guys definitely aren't about what meets the eye; definite style but much more substance. Music is their thing, and pop is where their heart is. In their own words: "Pop is in our bones. From the day we met, we always said we could never sell out because we both love pop." But rather than just talking the talk they take the genre to a new level by writing lyrics that are the keys to whole atmospheres, what they call a "mixture of grandeur and instant reaction."

Lyrics that actually cover a lot of ground if you look at the work they have released so far: they may have done the unavoidable pop song about love at first sight but that particular version featured a suicidal man on a bridge. Which is another reason why making assumptions is futile: a band that covers some of the more common darker themes but still admits to wanting to emulate the pop star figure and confesses a soft spot for the Gaga herself. Now we're a little confused but highly intrigued and very expectant!

Another video treat posted yesterday, a week before the first single release on January 18th!
