Late of the Pier: Making top of the class

Posted Feb 23, 2010

The band, Late of the Pier may be a bunch of jokers, but the amount of talent spewing from this four-man front is no joke.Band member, Sam Potter makes his directorial debut with Late of the Pier's newest video, "Best in Class" and invited everyone from random Facebook friends to his own grandma to be a part of it all.

Late of the Pier is a faily new electronic, pop-rock band consisting of four young guys from Castle Donington, England:Sam Eastgate (Samuel Dust), Andrew Faley (Francis Dudley Dance), Sam Potter (Jack Paradise) and Ross Dawson (Red Dog Consuela). Although Late of the Pier has only released one album prior to their newest single, "Best in Class", they've always successfully managed to deliver solid tracks with varying sounds. The band's production quality serves as the main contributing factor for their recent success. It's that very production quality that has band member, Samuel Dust producing for another up and coming band, Egyptian Hip Hop.

Working with Egyptian Hip Hop hasn't derailed Samuel nor the band, as Late of the Pier recently released two singles and accompanying videos for both "Blueberry" and "Best in Class". Both songs showcasing the band's range to vary from electronic, 8-bit beats that make you want to break out in dance to melodic,down-tempo chill out music.

Late of the Pier's latest video, "Best in Class" embodies that 8-bit funk that makes you want to move your body in ways you didn't know were possible. For those shy types, no worries, you could always live vicariously through the video's girls who do nothing but dance in the video. The video's girls (who were casted through Facebook) can be found lip-synching while dancing around in a spinning motion. We must mention, not all the girls were invited from Facebook, in fact, another special woman got her very own spotlight at the end of the video: band member, Samuel Potter's grandmother.

In a recent interview with Dazed Digital, Late of the Pier was aked if they expected viewers to " feel a sense of nausea, especially when the old lady pops in" when watching the video. Sam Potter responded by sharing:

"I thought the start of the sound had some churning kind of element, like someone was winding it up. After editing the video for a week I could feel my eyes still spinning in their sockets. In some it induces a trance and they can communicate with dead relatives but in others it's just a sick feeling. The old lady at the end is my grandma, she's the still point in a spinning world." We're left gushing after reading a response like that.

Check out both the original and director's cut of "Best in Class".
