Hear me Hiromi?

Posted Jan 1, 2009

She's young, cool, Japanese and very talented. It's time to download a jazz soundtrack that doesn't scream middle-aged.

If you speak to Hiromi Uehara she’ll admit the odds have been stacked against her as Jazz player – there are not many Japanese women that spring to mind (if any?) that spend their evenings performing in such prestigious venues as Ronnie Scott’s in London or the Blue Note in New York and Milan.

On-stage she is mesmerizing, not only for her wonderful eclectic look (courtesy of her husband, fashion designer Miharo Yasuhiro) but the energy that radiates from her. At the tender age of only twenty-six Hiromi already has a number of prestigious awards to her name (In 2006, Hiromi won Best Jazz Act at the Boston Music Awards and the Guinness Jazz Festival's Rising Star Award. She also claimed Jazzman of the Year, Pianist of the Year and Album of the Year in Swing Journal Japan's Readers Poll for her 2006 release, Spiral), and unusually for a musician lists Carl Lewis and Michael Jordan as inspirations, due to their ‘big, big energy’.
