Exploring the Black Sands with Bonobo

Posted Mar 16, 2010

In taking a break from all the 8-bit electro and soft rock we’ve been coming across, Swide winds down to the relaxing beats off Brit DJ, Bonobo’s newest album, “Black Sands”.

British dj, Bonobo, has been known for his mastering of instrumentally rich remixes and producing skills throughout his impressive 10 years in the industry. Though he might not be the freshest dj on the block, his expertise and consistency are what have the public enjoying and anticipating the release of his music. Bonobo is back with his fourth album, “Black Sands” with two recently added treats: a visually enticing new video and Bonobo hosting a remix competition.

Bonobo first made music headlines with his first album “Animal Magic” in 2000. Animal Magic was produced and instrumented by Bonobo alone. He soon became to be none as one of the “new down-tempo pioneers”. His musical background provided Bonobo with a talent for musical composition, cleverly mixing different sounds from the piano to xylophone. Bonobo’s talent came to be discovered as he was signed to major label, Ninja Tune in 2003. In terms of Bonobo’s sound, he always keeps true to his linear beats and airy vocals (by Andreya Triana). Triana has been providing her vocals to Bonobo tracks for some years, as he in exchange produced her solo debut album.

Generally speaking, Bonobo never really drastically changed his sound, but did try a new musical venture during the release of his second album “Dial M for Monkey”. After getting signed to label Ninja Tune, Bonobo found himself less producing, but dj, spinning drum & bass, funky beats.

In 2006, Bonobo dropped the electronic djing scene for a return to lusher, more live sound than compared to before. In continuing with a richer sound, Bonobo will be releasing a new album, “Black Sands" on March 29th, that is said to be full of "draw as much on the rhythms of two-step as the lush soundscapes for which he's (Bonobo) best known, 'Eyesdown' also features a remarkable vocal from Andreya Triana and enough fuzzed-out sub-bass for a binful of dubsteppers".

Check out the trippy video for 'Eyesdown' in where a girldonning a native headdress is frolocking aimlessly in a forest.

If you ever wanted to have your own music remixed by the dj legend, Bonobo is holding a remix competition until March 19th, in where fans upload their remixes of "Eyesdown" and the winner will get a remix of their own in return from Bonobo, himself. Visit his website here more info.

Album comes out March 29th, 2010.
