Exclusive interview with Katy Perry

Posted Nov 11, 2008

Milan fashion week marked a first for Katy Perry – her first time in Italy and her first Milan fashion week. We were there to find out her thoughts on falling in love, and why she traded in her clothes for a piece of D&G…

Katy cites Freddie Mercury as a big influence. We asked her what her favourite Queen song is.

“Killer Queen”. It was the first song I heard and I wondered how he got his perspective, how he knows what empowers a woman, and I wanted to be this woman.

On her rise to fame.

It was tough times. I moved to L.A when I was 17. I never realised music was so corporate. Artists get into the industry with pure intentions, and it’s hard to have them respected. It took three record labels to take a chance. In the meantime I did everything she could to open a door – sang backgrounds, tried to form a band.

On the rumours of her becoming an actress and appearing in a horror flick.

I’ve had a couple of offers, but I’m not dying to be in the next horror flick. A move to film would be the same as my music with a lot of focus. There are too many celebrities that take advantage, bit like a Medusa.

Has she considered becoming a designer?

I’ve bought a sketchbook! I dream about clothes, but if I do something it will have a large sense of humour.

On the U.S election campaign.

It’s the most important in history. Everyone should vote, educate yourself, and be active. I never realised until now how important this time the election is.

Who she will vote for

I don’t believe in voicing my opinions so that girls go around saying Katy Perry is voting for this person and therefore so am I am. Its important to educate yourself.

Weaknesses?

We all have flaws. I like the rock and roll girls from years ago – the girls didn’t give a f***. Now girls, especially in the states are scared.

On falling in love…

I don’t fall in love with the face. I fall in love with the mind and eventually think the boy is beautiful…I like a man to be stronger than me, but it’s hard to find.

On releasing “I kissed a girl” as the first song off her album.

We want people to sing along, but even without the words it’s a pop, fun song. I was confident that there are other songs and personalities to be shown. I’m not in a rush like some artists to show everything… that will come in time. Plus, a little provocation never hurt anyone.

On Milan and fashion week

I’ve never been to Milan or Italy before. The food is good and the boys are handsome. It’s a fashion Mecca for the rest of the world. It’s easy to say I went to NY fashion week but if you go to Milan, you really do the distance.

And finally how did she end up at as a front row guest at the D&G show?

I’ve always liked D&G and traded in my clothes to buy one piece plus its always fun to be a part of something so international.
