Esperanza Spalding: Part angel, part siren
Esperanza in Spanish means hope - something we all perhaps need a shot of in 2009. As if anticipating current events, she sings on her debut album, Heads Up,
"only hard work through time can change men's minds, I know if we make some small changes now, we'll heal ourselves, some way, somehow..."
We're setting our album clock an hour early from now on.
With her siren call, the incredibly talented and young at only twenty-three, Esperanza not only composes and arranges her own music but also sings in three languages. Her debut album takes a completely fresh and refreshing approach to jazz by incorporating the rich traditions of soul, pop, and world music.
She's joined on her album by a crew of A-list session players, including flamenco guitar virtuoso Niño Josele, percussionist Jamey Haddad, drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernández, saxophonist Donald Harrison and several other seasoned talents - all of whom collectively serve as further evidence of the kind of creative energy and magnetism that she radiates.
