Broken Bells: a heaven-sent collaboration

Posted Feb 2, 2010

The coming together of two musical geniuses has created for both excitement and fear amongst the music industry. The Shin’s James Mercer and Brian Burton of Gnarls Barkley have formed supergroup, Broken Bells. This new collaboration has people wondering whether or not Mercer or Burton will be returning to their respected groups.

Broken Bells is the new musical love child between James Mercer and Brian Burton. How did such a collaboration come to exist? James Mercer explained to NME, “As things started to wind down for me I wanted to try something totally different," Mercer explained. "It'd had started to feel heavy [in The Shins]. I didn't know what I wanted to do, maybe a solo thing or a new band. And Brian happened to be having the same kind of ideas".

After Mercer's interview, many rumors started to surface around The Shins breaking up. Fans may be pleased to know that in addition to not breaking up, The Shins are also in the works of a new album for 2011. Until then, we have the pleasure of being soothed by the seductive sounds of Broken Bells. The duo is set to release their self-titled album of ten tracks, March, 9, 2010.

Broken Bells have recently premiered their first video, "High Road", directed by Grammy Award winning Sophie Muller. Keeping true to her dark and incomprehensible style, "High Road" is another video open to some thoughful interpretations .
