Venice Film Festival: Terraferma Premier.

Posted Nov 9, 2011

The premier of Emanuele Crialese's latest screen play got the red carpet treatment this weekend at the 68th Venice Film Festival and Donatella Finocchiaro, Beppe Fiorello and Filippo Pucillo joined the director.

Crialese’s film’s location is based on the island of Linosa, south of Sicily, and beautifully portrays the interruption to all that is considered normal by the arrival of illegal immigrants from Africa.

The way in which Crialese uses the landscape that the Sicilian islands provide captures the grandeur and magnificence that these destinations hold and what makes them popular amongst the Italians and those from further a field. They are an inspiration for many, not just directors and photographers, but also numerous others who come from the islands, like the designers Dolce&Gabbana.

The influence that the islands have over the designers is one that is strong and Dolce&Gabbana draw upon many experiences, traditions and characteristics that express the delights that these Sicilian gems shine with. An example of this was seen at the Men’s SS12 fashion shows, where the theme of the ‘net’ was strong throughout, reflecting the work of fishermen but also interweaving this with the designer’s love affair with the Internet. They are able to mix tradition with current innovation, remembering to look back to move forward, never forgetting the threads of tradition that underline everything that we do.

Emanuele Crialese’s film also captures this sense of tradition existing within new thinking and how the world is changing around us and how those around us perceive these changes. He has created something of taut beauty, acknowledging the different ways that people react to different social situations and changes within their immediate lives with smart portrayal.

The feature length received the red carpet treatment during the premier at the Venice Film Festival and was attended by those that make the story come alive. Emanuele Crialese has touched upon similar subjects and use of location in the films ‘Once We Were Strangers’ and ‘Repiro’.  ‘Terraferma’ is certainly one to watch and will be hitting cinemas this September.
