Today’s superwomen- how do they do it?

Posted Sep 16, 2011

The trials of being a modern woman are well documented, in both fiction and real life. The latest movie to come out of this genre chronicles the life of a working mother played by Dolce&Gabbana favourite Sarah Jessica Parker.

Allison Pearson, Welsh writer and journalist has put pen to paper and relayed a comic take on very real issues in her book I Don’t Know How She Does It. This year, the multi million selling novel is being turned into a film featuring at the centre of the cast SJP, made famous by the iconic series Sex and the City, where she played an incorrigible singleton, dealing with the issues of juggling work and a very taxing single life.

In the movie, SJP plays Kate Reddy, a financial advisor by day and devoted mother and wife by night. The dynamic of her relationship with her husband, played by Greg Kinner, and Reddy’s pressure, are made more complicated because as he’s out of work, making her the only breadwinner. The movie also sees Pierce Brosnan, who plays Reddy’s boss, coming along to throw a spanner in the works of this finely balanced life spent juggling work, motherhood and personal commitments.

And how does SJP portray this character? Well, in a way, the real SJP is more akin to Kate than Carrie. Married, mother of three who successfully balances her family life, acting career and a fashion label, she has her hands full.

We’ve witnessed a few celebs showing off their baby bumps over the summer, most recently Beyoncè, Carla Bruni and Jessica Alba. Now we’re left to wonder… how will they do it? From a fashion viewpoint, they seem to have it covered.
