Transatlantic athletic training

Posted Jul 23, 2009

As Swide continues on A.C Milan's summer tour - we Interview the club's chief fitness coach to discover how the team is handling their US Tour and why working out on sand is our our new favorite workout tip.

Daniele Tognaccini is AC Milan’s chief fitness coach. Swide caught up with him in California...

Daniele, what techniques have you used to help the footballers’ bodies adjust to the time difference in the US?

When we got off the plane in Los Angeles we had to adjust to a tough jetlag of minus nine hours. To help the players adjust to their new timezone we immediately did a one-hour training session: from the plane we went directly to the UCLA training ground, without even stopping at the hotel, and did an extremely intense training session in order to shake up the hormones and help the players’ bodies recover.
Then we continued with the same training routine we used in Italy for the first two weeks of pre-season training. The players have been working well with that system, and they haven’t had any problems.

So why train on Santa Monica beach?

Training on sand requires a much, much higher energy output than on the field. It also means that the strength work is concentrated in the upper leg, which is the muscle area most used when the guys are playing. As sand is difficult to grip  the leg has to work harder to push off, and this helps reinforce the muscles.
In terms of the beautiful location, we always opt for “characteristic” places in the cities we stay in. It’s an important time for building group morale and team bonding, because the players can have fun while they workout.
We did the same when we went to the US on other occasions. For example, we trained on an amazing field next to Lake Michigan when we were in Chicago, and on another space, next to the river, when we were in New York.
