The Fake Sartorialist

Posted Oct 22, 2009

They say imitation is the highest form of flattery – (obviously uttered by someone never stood next to someone in the same outfit at a party.) New blog, The Fake Sartorialist, could be proof Scott Schuman, and his (real) blog, The Sartorialist has reached worldwide infiltration.

The obvious test of a trend turning mainstream (aside from Madonna using it) is if your mother knows what you’re talking about. It’s all very well turning up for the weekend revelling in your city success and mentioning the underground magazine/club/bar/blog you’re working for to see your mother’s eyes mist up as you attempt to explain for the third time that ‘in the city everybody knows what your talking about’.

We’re not necessary advocating everybody should turn to the mainstream of course, but surrounded by the social media bubble we tend to live in – it’s easy to forget when you step outside into mass media-ville what is considered a hot trend online is not always necessarily the case elsewhere. We think new blog The Fake Sartorialist may have just underlined a trend’s mainstream crossover point.

New site The Fake Sartorialist is a cheeky take on the now world famous blog, The Sartorialist by Scott Schuman, a photographer who snaps the world’s best dressed and posts the enviable images on his site.

The Sartorialist actually launched way back in September 2005 as a photo diary of well-dressed people walking the streets of New York. It has since gone onto garner incredible success culminating with a book that was released this year in July, SartoriaLUST pop-up shops and a monthly fashion column for GQ.

The blog has inspired hundreds of copycat blogs – some good and some not so good, yet this week marks a true turning point – the blog’s first true imitator. If The Sartorialist were a pop star, it would be the equivalent of having his first tribute band.

The Fake Sartorialist’s tagline is, “I'm fake I'm hip and I know it” –a witty description that matches its subjects - Photo-shopped fashionistas, “Hotter than a fake Louis V bag.” The site comes complete (ironically) with an, ‘official Facebook page.’ Click on the-fake-sartorialist.blogspot.com or check out The Sartorialist at thesartorialist.blogspot.com.
