Kaya Scodelario, the coming of age of a teenage icon

Posted Mar 9, 2010

The Skins-obsessed world has been following her character's antics for over three years now and the infatuation is as much with onscreen Effy as with hauntingly beautiful Kaya. And with more in store than raving in the woods these days... Is this the most exciting coming of age ever?

Her face is bound to be familiar: first because her beauty makes her instantly recognisable, second because she has been a darkly beautiful presence on the small screen for a few years now. And while hit British show Skins is still going strong (currently in its fourth series), the opportunities of catching her on bigger screens in more diverse contexts are more and more. Kaya Scodelario has been well-known and loved for a while now but are we witnessing the start to the rest of her life?

It started with a few fleeting appearances; the main guy's troubled younger sibling (that older sibling would be Tony Stonem aka Nicholas Hoult... we would say fantastic looks ran in the family if that actually was one), drugs and a taste for all things way beyond her years. While being stunning and intriguing, one may have stopped at that; but the producers' decision to bring her back in the 3rd series as the main act may have just propelled the show in a whole other dimension. No longer the bothersome little sister Effy became the number one onscreen mystery - and teenage fantasy, for teenagers and not just. A peculiar mix of provocativeness and reserve; traits we imagine miles away from Kaya's personality though embodying such duality and complexity would have called for an especially complex and resourceful actress. For that only Kaya Scodelario deserves major respect.

There is also that air about her, the fact that while temptalisingly beautiful she seems to possess a rare freshness - talking moral sense would be taking it a touch too far but Kaya certainly comes across as a young girl with values and an exquisite head planted firmly on beautifully delicate shoulders. These days while the industry is getting younger and younger, there is very little left of the innocent and fresh to most of these youths for whom it often is a case of too much, too soon. Refreshingly enough for a 17 year-old in the entertainment industry, Kaya still has some of her teenage ways - don't we envy her!

Kaya's career is a definite confirmation of the bigger things that have already started to happen; after a noted appearance in remarkable independent film Moon, after playing an atlogether different type of troubled youth (much less dreaming about on Bristolian benches and much more London gang action) in Shank (out at the end of this month), she is also about to enjoy a proper introduction to Hollywood , blockbuster-style, in uber-remake Clash of the Titans (check the trailer below), out in a matter of weeks.

If you're impatient and curious to see more, you might always join her many Twitter stalkers and enjoy some of her finer anecdotes and starstruck moments (who would have thought!)... Between blunt honesty (which most of us are too old to get away with) "My head really hurts.... Looked through my tweets from last nite,no more drinkin and tweeting 4 me!From wat I remember it was a fun nite!" and classic gems "Winter Olympics is the best hangover tv ever!".

Our favourite: "Rrrr runnin out of things 2 wear 4 LFW.Shit, gonna hav 2 start re-useing outfits..fuck it I'm 17,can't afford 2 buy a dif outfit 4 everyday!" Humility is the new black.
