We were happy to see Caterina on stage in photos of her new play; not necessarily for the intensity of her performance (though no doubt she was brilliant) but rather for her character's wardrobe: how nice to see some current Spring/Summer designs on the boards for a change!
Only a few weeks ago we were reading the Guardian's theatre critic's comment piece denouncing a few cases of style over substance; when stage productions turned into catwalk shows. It was feared that while actors cut perfectly dashing figures in exquisitely cut suits the attention to sartorial detail could cost the play some of its credibility and distract from its more fundamental aspects. But get it right and you can take a play into a whole other dimension.
Seeing Caterina frozen mid-replica in Dolce&Gabbana outfits we feel it might be the latter in this case; the female lead in Dona Flor and her two husbands, an adaptation of a 1970s Brazilian film, she is both naive and a bigamist. Which is why the Sicilian-inspired designs that are both traditional and very sensual come as a visual expression of the character's duality.
Having heard of Scarlett Johansson's upcoming Broadway performance in Arthur Miller's A view from the bridge we are now furiously wondering what... sorry, that was *who* she will be wearing!
