Goodbye California

Posted Jul 22, 2009

The Rossoneri’s final day in California - and it starts early. Swide reveals what the Milan players get up to on their final day in L.A before they move on to Atlanta. See the backstage pictures and get all the gossip by clicking here.

At 8am the players were up and ready for breakfast - Ambrosini, Bonera, Antonini and Zambrotta led the way as the rest of the team soaked up the warm light of Los Angeles before they left.

The surprise of the morning was the arrival of newlywed Alexandre Pato who joined the group early at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, and immediately went to greet his teammates. The number 7 rossonero has just returned from his honeymoon with Stephanie, his beautiful wife. With his arrival, the squad is complete. As jetlag hit, coffee and a big breakfast were on the menu before the bus left.

The bus headed to the beautiful Santa Monica beach that had been inspected the day before by the squad's trainer, Leonardo with Tassotti and Tognaccini. An incredible location for a morning workout - and the tough part of player's job, but the beach setting made it fun.

A long row of palm trees runs along the Santa Monica coast. Cycle lanes run the length of the coast ensuring bikes are the most effective way to get about. A few surfers ride the icy waves of the Pacific with families spotted along the beach. Stretching, jogging by the beach, it was a workout on the sand for the squad with classic music playing in the background from a nearby bar.

The first fans began to approach the team when they realized it was actually Milan training in front of them. Full of enthusiasm they asked for autographs and photographs. A group of Brazilians came over to say hi to Pato and Ronaldinho. The beach was boiling hot and Gattuso, Dida and Storari attempted to find some shade. Elsewhere a beach volley challenge started, Inzaghi Ambrosini and Castellazzi against Oddo Flamini and Primitivi.

After the beach workout it was back to the hotel for a shower, a quick lunch and then to the airport. The guys were a bit sad to leave California - Destination Atlanta.

Aboard the private jet the guys watched transfixed at the view of Los Angeles below - majestic, imposing, and yet never-ending. As the desert came into view, the calm of the first part of the trip was interrupted by Oddo, Gattuso, Kalac and Bonera who decided now was the perfect opportunity to joke around with their team-mates.

Four hours later and the plane lands in Atlanta at 21.30. The sight of a clear sky and red sun means the good weather should follow Milan to their new destination. The squad transfers to the Saint Regis hotel to start a new adventure - tired, the team has dinner together, then it’s off to their rooms to relax - tomorrow they play.
