Exclusive interview: Brit rising star Toby Kebbell

Posted Jan 22, 2009

Nominated for a BAFTA for Best Newcomer we caught up with the very lovely Toby Kebbell backstage at the Dolce & Gabbana FW10 show to discover a bit more about the rumours swirling around him, and Ridley Scott's new Robin Hood film, Nottingham.

The one thing that strikes you when you first meet Toby is that he's a natural. It therefore comes as no surprise that he's up for Best Newcomer at this year's British version of the Oscars - the BAFTA's. When we describe him as a natural we don't mean a "luvvie" - no, what he actually possesses is that rare quality - a realness and a warmth that translates immediately to the screen (or in this case our video camera).

We went in search of where it came from and if he really is returning to Nottingham to star in Ridley Scott's new Robin hood Film? Take a pek below at Toby's career so far below - and count the world's leading directors as you go along. Jealous? Us?

Toby Kebbell was born in 1982 in Yorkshire, England. He left school at 15 to pursue his dreams of becoming a painter. Whilst training at the Central Junior Television Workshop, director Shane Meadows picked him for a part in the film “Dead Man’s Shoes” (2004) - the movie that kick-started Toby's acting career and ensured his painting would have to wait a little while longer.

In the same year, director Oliver Stone chose him to play Pausanius in the epic film “Alexander”, followed in 2005 when he won a small role in Woody’s Allen's 2005 movie, “Match point”. After Match Point, Toby went onto play a variety of parts on Brit TV - giving him a wider audience and ensuring in 2007, when Guy Ritchie was casting for his new underworld criminal flick, “RocknRolla” - Toby got the call - and a part.

This year - we'll see Toby in the new Stephen Frears film “Cheri” acting alongside Hollywood A-listers Michelle Pfeiffer and Kathy Bates. In this forthcoming drama, based on a Colette novel, Toby gets involved in some intriguing love affairs set in an historic 1920's Paris.

Scheduled for release in 2010 is Mike Newell’s “Prince of Persia”, starring Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, Jake Gyllenhall and, you guessed it...Toby.

Although shrouded in mystery - it'll be interesting to see if the rumours flying around as we speak are true. Will Toby be returning to his home town, Nottingham to shoot in Ridley Scott's forthcoming film, "Nottingham"? The film - a recreation of the Robin Hood story is set to star Russell Crow as Robin. Stay tuned.

Good luck at the BAFTA'S Toby - we're rooting for you!!
