Swide shares with you the beginning of the Roitfeld - Vogue story: discover or re-discover Carine Roitfeld’s first cover for Vogue Paris back in April 2001.

While thinking of her decision to step down and leave one of our fashion bibles, French Vogue, we cannot help but wonder what is next…
First reaction when reading the news: “unbelievable!! Is it a social media kind of joke?” shortly after trustworthy sources like Vogue UK offiicialised the goodbye story, we had to admit it… Our mesmerising icon is closing her Vogue chapter.

Of course, the question is what she will be exploring and doing after 10 years spent in the fashion red carpet allées. No rumours to chew on yet but a feeling that the one who will walk in the Vogue Paris Editor-in-Chief shoes, will have to have a strong personality and a proven sense of style. The hand over standards are high, indeed, who can tell me who preceded Carine at Vogue? If you happen to be a knowledgeable fashionista and to have the answer, good for you but have a check around… Mrs. Roitfeld did drive Vogue very far; her cat’s eyes and elongated obscure silhouette are synonyms of dark sensuality, which embrace so well a decade of glam rock and black upon colour fashion tags and graffiti.
When she first stepped in the Condenast building on Rue Saint Honoré in January 2001, her task was huge and her mission challenging: she had to restore the French publication’s leadership on the newsstands but also in the minds of unconditional fashion buddies.
In 10 years, she has redefined a French Vogue approach, imposed her style and printed her stamp that screams humour. While shaking fashion’s conservatism by choosing actresses to cast in fashion stories rather than models or by adopting collage cutout layouts for product pages, she took her team and readers on a glamorous unforgettable journey. We cannot wait to see a retrospective exhibition featuring “her” covers… Where& when?
