Battle of the prima donnas

Posted Dec 17, 2009

We do not find the idea of leading Hollywood ladies acting like divas especially new or surprising but this lot are taking it a step further... but strictly onscreen as they play the iconic opera queen Maria Callas.

Maria Callas is timeless but lately her name has been on our lips rather a lot more as the ultimate opera goddess is definitely in the air du temps. It first started with a t-shirt: Call us easily obsessed by clothes but this winter's D&G number has been lusted after even beyond our tight-minded fashion sphere; picking up on it have also been various directors as no less than two films are set to be produced in the upcoming year.

Italian biography So Proud, So Fragile has inspired the screenplay for an Anglo-Italian production whose leading lady could be either one of Penelope Cruz or Anne Hathaway and while we are feeling a sultry Spaniard would be the more obvious choice (So Proud..) we would be curious to see America's sweetheart (... So Fragile) transition from slave to a diva to diva herself.

Eva Mendes will be putting her best singing voice forward in a French production: Brit Julian Fellowes was tapped for a screenplay based on Callas' affair with Onassis, as written in Greek Fire.

However much we are looking forward to seeing who will come out on top we cannot help but remember with a certain fondness for Fanny Ardant's rendition alongside Jeremy Irons in Zeffirelli's Callas Forever, a moving account of her last days shot by an actual friend of the diva. The man himself was caught saying: “Fanny Ardant is Maria Callas because she’s become her within herself. Somehow, she’s found the diva’s stature, quality and lovely innocence.” We can only agree upon seeing her on the red carpet only last week, all demure appeal and French vampiness.

The firey diva: Eva Mendes, roaringly sexy in a Dolce & Gabbana dress earlier this year at the Venice Biennale.

La diva parisienne: Fanny Ardant in Marrakech last week, head to toe French chic in a Dolce & Gabbana dress.

Finally, the office diva: a non-gender specific honourary title awarded to whoever is first to spot the latest collection's most iconic piece. This winter is all about the D&G Callas t-shirt (which you can find here on D&G's online store)! Say it like it is with a t-shirt, expect no less than the prima donna treatment.
