Lei e le altre, women’s magazine retrospective in Milan

Posted Sep 21, 2011

"Lei e le altre". "She and the others". We are not talking about the latest Italian dramatic film.  Today's story is about magazines and women. "Lei" (the Italian for "She"), was one of the first Italian women's magazine published by Rizzoli in the early 30s, and “le altre” (the others) are all the publications that has been seen around during the last century - and that are composing a special exhibition  launched a few days ago here in Milan.

The path , that has been drawn by fashion expert and curator Maria Luisa Frisa in a very methodical way, brings the visitors through an incredible series of historical photographies, illustrations, interviews, videos and installations, dragging the audience, in a very simple way, into the colorful, complicated, sometimes thoughtless and sometimes commited world of women.

“Donna”, “Elle”, “Io donna”, “L’Europeo”, “La donna”, “Lei” ,“Annabella”,“Anna”,“Luna park”, “Novella”, “Oggi”, “Sogno” are just some of  the friends who are bringing people through this pleasant journey, made up of the instants, colours and ideas that have accompanied women through the last century till nowadays.

Fashion, Feminism, Home and Design, Actuality and Celebrities: macro-themes are the best way to sum up the contents of the exhibition (and of its very interesting and consistent catalogue, by Marsilio).  What comes out is a clear representation of the female figure and its evolution, the exaltation of fashion and of its main characters and, obviously, the changes in the world of information.

Since 1930, till nowadays mean a lot of time. “Lei” has been wearing so many clothes and changing so many faces that she could appear completely different now, but there is still a diva’s heart beating inside her!

You can see the exhibition “Lei e le altre, moda e stili nelle riviste RCS dal 1930  a oggi” at Museo della Permanente, in Milano until October, 15th.
