Milan's International Design Fair 2011: 50 Years Young

Half
a century has passed since the founders gathered together to present to the rest
of the world Italian masters and crafts. The theme of the 2011 edition is
revealing the genuine approach the organisers have decided to take this year.
“50 Years Young”, yes, you have read well, no typo mistake here but a real
emphasis on the futuristic characteristic of this fair and how it is meant to
blend in a very unique and special way tradition and modernity.
Of
course this edition will look into the past to pay tribute to the forward
thinking minds that set up the first ever Salone del Mobile in 1969. The master
names to remember are Castiglioni, Magistretti, Menghi Sottsass, Viganò, Zanuso
and the business brains in the like of Cassina, Castelli, Gandini. Various
installations to be seen at the fair itself and in the centre of Milan as well
as temporary exhibitions such as the Rho complex one where domestic furniture
will be featured or the Euroluce that displays the best in terms of lightings
with a particular focus on technology. To add an historical touch to the
celebration the Piccolo Teatro di Milano will host a play by Laura Curino that
tells the origin of Il Salone del Mobile and underlines the ever-growing
relationship between industries and creative minds.

“Italiana”: An Italian style comedy by Luca Finotti
The Matt Silk Collection for SS12 is cool, pretty and perfectly in tune with this season’s main trend: Fifties. Luca Finotti, an up and coming Italian director was charged with creating a video to contextualize the inspiration behind the glasses. Drawing from by the classic Italian Fifties comedies, the video tells a story of ironic jealousy between mother and daughter. Think classic car, Bianca Balti, vintage music, Italian scenery. The story for the video was created by Swide, styled by Yuri Ahn and directed by Luca Finotti. A Fifties day out for a contemporary woman.
