Kasia Bielska: Edgy fashion photography with a clean finish

Posted May 28, 2011

Kasia Bielska is one of the new emerging fashion photographers who has recently caught my eyes. Her works are very clean and edgy and this is why her images can capture your attention. Swide readers, today I present you Kasia Bielska.

M: Hello Kasia, thank you so much for answering my questions on Swide this week. So let me ask you, how did you get into the photography business? Other than fashion, do you shoot other types of photography as well?

K: I wouldn't call it business yet :) I'm just starting to build my portfolio.

Even though I started doing photography about 4 years ago but I've considered myself a photographer for only 2 years. I am studying at a film school and that is where my photographic awareness began to form. The school gives me the opportunity to do things that are totally different from what I usually do. At school we do creative photography, documentary photography and reportage.

I had to try to take all types of photography, but in the end, fashion is my only true interest.

M: Now I know that you study at a film school, no wonder your composition is so spot on all the time! So, if you could only use one word to describe your works, what would it be?

K: I guess, it would be 'purity'. Purity of form, purity of light, purity within the frame.

M: Purity never really pop up in my head, but instead, clean and edgy are the words I can use to describe your images. Well, your works tend to be very futuristic to me, is that the photography style you want people to recognize when they think of your name?

Of course it's be great if people associate you with a certain style. But I certainly wouldn't like to be defined by the term 'futuristic'. I'm very keen on unrealistic spaces and simple forms. But it doesn't mean that I'm not going to try other things. There's an infinite number of ideas!

M: I am sure when you do more photo shoots in the future, your style will start to evolve and I am looking forward to see that. I am curious, where do you usually get your inspirations from? Since your photos are very futuristic, do you take reference from sci-fi movies?

K: Apart from fashion, there's a lot of things around me that I find interesting - light, space, colours... They work as some kind of leaven that my world is build from. To be honest, I hate sci-fi movies :) I haven't even watched Star Trek. I think I'm more into fairytales.

M: That’s interesting and guess from now on, I have to take the word futuristic out of my mind when I look at your works. Last but not least, if you could take one of Dolce & Gabbana collections and use the pieces for your next editorial shoot, which collection would you want to use? What kind of imagery would you like to achieve?

K: I totally love the Winter 2012 collection! Blending stars and shiny fabrics

alongside with male garments is a wonderful way to tell the story of Le Petit

Prince. I'm positive the pictures would be magical and full of light.
