Marcus Kan Presents: Connie Lim

Posted Apr 14, 2011

Connie Lim's dark and mysterious works have totally captured my eyes and I feel like I need to ask this fashion illustrator some question. I present you Connie Lim as this week’s featured artist.

M: It’s my pleasure to be abel to feature you on Swide since your works are very amazing! Would you mind to tell me what made you want to become a fashion illustrator? Does your fashion design knowledge help with your illustrator career?

C: I first attended Art Center College of Design and pursued illustration and I always knew since a child that I wanted to draw. Then I met Nancy Regeilmen, my mentor, who taught me fashion illustration and fell in love with it. She told me I drew things more attractive than they were in reality and that led me to this path. Since I have the fashion design knowledge such as knowing where the seams should go and how the patterns should look like, it gives my illustrations a more reality feeling.

M: I am glad you have chosen to be an illustrator since you drawing skill is great! So, in your own words, what adjectives will best describe your illustration style?

C: I would say dark, mysterious and somewhat sexual because I believe these are the qualities I can use to describe women. Some are more obvious than others in levels but I think these qualities give me the guideline to draw the style that I do.

M: Dark and mysterious are 2 adjectives I can think of when looking at your works and I think sexual is what set your style apart from other fashion illustrators. So, out of all the illustrations you have done so far, which one is your favorite?

C: The queen of Spade is probably my all time favorite. I just think the personality is spot on from what I imagine from the symbol spade. As I have found out it has a symbolic meaning of death, I thought about a particular women who embraced it, came to term with it, lived her life as a rebel and the illustration just developed from that concept.

M: I never knew the true meaning of Spade until now, this is a rather interesting concept! Now I am curious, what made you want to create the Fashion Playing Card series? Will you continue to work on this project to complete the card deck?

C: It started out as a project from my mentor. We were asked to look at Visionaires from V magazine and developed something from that. I chose the deck of cards and this has become my series. I think it will take me awhile but in the future I will definitely finish the whole deck and hopefully you can see the evolution of my drawing when the journey of this project comes to an end.

M: I can’t wait to see the completed version of the deck and hopefully it will be soon! Last but not least, what do you think of the new Dolce & Gabbana F/W 2011 collection? Are there any pieces you must illustrate?

C: As always, I love the collection. The pieces are lovely and the colors a brilliant. I would like to illustrate many of them but I fear the textiles would take forever! But in the near future, I definitely would give it a shot.
