Luca Podda's Moment of Pop Fame

Posted Feb 25, 2011

Artist Marco Santaniello interprets Luca Podda's boxer-figure in a new pop-light. What does it mean to be pop?

Can a boxer be a digital-pop icon? According to artist Marco Santaniello, most definitely yes.

"I wanted to "pop" Luca Podda up because I feel we are going through a time when young people need a strong symbol of courage, work, and Luca is just that for the new generations. His commitment inspired me to immortalize him."

Pop means popular? In this case Luca Podda's graphic rendering should touch a "popular" - meaning wide - audience with its colors, direct appeal, and contemporary iconic appeal. It's not the case of a soup can but rather of making more approachable, and therefore connecting the general public with the qualities of the boxer, by making it "pop art", the idea is to make it widely diffused as concept, way of living, to create a model to follow.

Is boxing the right subject? At times of uncertainty to go back to a sport that exists from antiquity seems utterly contemporary for its flawless rules and discipline. To be young and disciplined, healthy, and beaming with enthusiasm, these should be the concepts contemporary art wants to convey.

*Marco Santaniello is an artist that started his career in fashion by creating t-shirts and t-skirts, other than being a versatile explorer of all the things creative.
