In Your Fridge by Stephanie de Rouge
She
never ate at home so she said 'Why not?' when her mother advised using the
fridge as extra storage. My great-grandmother used to put her perfume bottles in
the fridge in order to keep them 'fresh' as she would call it. My next door
neighbor keeps his t-shirts in his fridge as well and he defends his rather
'strange' behavior saying: 'I like the touch of cold t-shirts on my skin when I
wear them after a hot shower.' Me? I'm a simple guy: a few cucumbers to use as
an eye-mask, avocado puree' as a purifying mask and a bottle of perfume, as a
family tradition.
Since
fridges are always marketed as a 'food' storage, it is kind of strange to see
out-of-context uses. What you store inside your fridge is a bit of how you run
your life, no? Karl Lagerfeld once said fashion is the healthiest motivation to
lose weight, is it really? Do you have all that non-fat stuff infesting your
Smeg? Or are you the type who can't get enough of the tasty fried chicken?
Do
you drink milk or orange juice in the mornings? How do you digest after dinner?
A bottle of Perrier or limoncello? Tell me what you eat and I might tell you who
you are.
Stephanie
de Rouge is an amazingly talented photographer who got my attention like a
Kinder egg that gets the attention of a 3 year old. Kinder has one surprise
inside, Stephanie has many. Her first work that I got to see was 'in your
fridge'. She documented various types of people in their bedrooms then she
decided it wasn't enough so she started shooting the inside of their fridges in
order to get a glimpse into their personalities.
She
said: ' The building walls don't talk. New Yorkers move all the time, share and
sublet rooms. Not a good setting for a long term relationship with one self.' I
have to admit that I fell in love with her work. It was the work of a genius.
After having seen this pictures, I remembered a scene from the movie 'Pianist'.
Do you remember when the family wants to hide the money from the police, they
hide it under the newspapers on the table? They leave it there, in the most
obvious, least hidden place.
But
given that it's laid out that openly, nobody cares about the newspapers so they
never find the money. Inside of a fridge is like that. In a way, it seems so
obvious that it's a storage for food that you don't even check it. But when
Stephanie gives in to her curiosity and starts photographing it, she finds
different things: tshirts, barbies, toys...
Yes,
you should definitely check Stephanie de Rouge out. And not only 'in your
fridge'. I have to say that my personal favorite is 'Not Really Fashion' that
has this melancholic feel to it.
I'll
be following the works of de Rouge with intense curiosity. I'll be happy to have
my 'I've told you so' moment as she'll become world wide famous for the
exquisite art she'll reflect through her lens.
