From Soap Opera to Bubblegum Art

Posted Nov 23, 2010

If an opera can be associated with a bar of soap, why not art with bubblegum? Ben Wilson is famous for his miniature paintings on spat out gums on the streets of UK and he just finished his 10,000th piece.

The next time you spit out your bubblegum on the street and get told off by an elderly someone, try defending yourself saying you do it for the sake of art. After all, there’s Ben Wilson that will take care of your rude behavior and turn it into a little masterpiece.

Wilson is a London-based artist who paints onto chewing gums found on the pavements. Crawling on his knees and using tons of color to create and a bit of hardening lacquer to protect, he continues experimenting with new means of street art in UK.

Although he’s been doing this for quite a long time now (and having already been arrested for criminal damage and let out soon after), he has been ‘rediscovered’ recently thanks to his 10,000th piece and BBC’s new documentary on him.

It’s good to see that there’re people who try to create a difference and change the faults of others into tiny pieces of miracles. Next time you decide to spit out your chewing gum, choose well the place you’d like hang your painting and remember… bubblegum is the new canvas.
