Bjorn Dahlem: The cosmos within items.

Posted Aug 19, 2011

Taking seemingly household objects, Bjorn Dahlem creates installations and sculptures that echo abstract concepts of space and matter. He also delves into the fragility of humanity through his structures.

His piece 'The Milky Way' (2007) is currently lighting up the Saatchi Gallery, in London, and stands defiant in the room as a solo exhibit. The combination of lumber and light slugs in the space, forming the title subject with its wooden web that creates jarring lines. The elements of this piece are recognisable immediately and even a bottle of milk is there to further guide the perception of the audience back to the title of the piece.

Wood features as a constant in the works of Dahlem and is usually paired with light as 'a symbol of the immaterial and of enlightenment'. This is seen in the other work being featured at the Saatchi Gallery entitled 'Cathedral' (2008), in which the combination of wood, light and jars create a  teetering sculpture reaching skyward, which represents the steeple of a Cathedral, a symbol which is usually considered with strength and sturdiness.

Other works by Dahlem continue with the use of these and more elements to create sculptures that fill exhibit spaces without overwhelming the viewer.
