Tower Records takes center stage

Posted Feb 16, 2010

Why let a good thing go to waste? The very question that cooperative, No Longer Empty (NLE) aims at answering. Rather than walking past dozens of empty storefronts, they’ve found a way to transform a once abandoned staple of the New York community (Tower Records) into a gallery and celebrate its rich beginnings.

Cofounder of No Longer Empty, Manom Slome explains how the cooperative came to be in existence:
“It started last year in response to the economic downturn, “walking on Madison one day, we counted about 15 empty storefronts”. Soon after realizing that those units would go on unused, Slome and colleague Asher Remy-Toledo sought to place art in unconventional settings. NLE are realizing their goal with the help of landlords donating the vacant spaces.

"Diaspora"-Paul Villinski

Rightfully named “Never Can Say Goodbye,” the exhibition by NLE takes a nostalgic journey into the good times of the beloved record store by showcasing music-inspired work like, “Diaspora” by Paul Villinski. “Diaspora” is an installation made up of birds constructed from vinyl records fluttering around a turntable. The birds somewhat symbolizes the essente of the record store that is being released from captivity. One doesn’t have to be a music lover to appreciate the art shown at NLE.
