The 24th annual SXSW (South by Southwest) Music and Media conference kicked off this past week in Austin, Texas. The much-anticipated event draws in the best in music, technology, and film to Austin, Texas. Swide takes a look at this year’s SXSW Film Festival winner, “Tiny Furniture”.

The SXSW festival isn’t known just for its amazing line-up of musical acts, but holds new media presentations and showcases fresh new films. At this year’s SXSW Film Festival few days ago, Lena Durham’s quirky film, “Tiny Furniture” won “Best Narrative Feature”. “Tiny Furniture” is about young woman named Aurora who is fresh out of college and trying to find her place in the ‘real world’. Not having much to be proud about aside from her Youtube channel that generates 357 hits, Aurora attempts to figure out life’s tricks in landing that ‘right’ job and man. Lucky for Aurora, her trainwreck best friend is around to make Aurora feel better about having a meaningless film theory degree and living at home with her mother.

Actress/filmmaker Lena Dunham isn’t new to the indie film scene as her first SXSW submission; “Creative Nonfiction” got rave reviews at last year’s film festival. “Creative Nonfiction” is about a college student named Ella, who’s more fixated on her pseudo-romance with her dorm mate Chris than on the screenplay she’s supposed to be completing for her Creative Writing class. Ella experiences a difficult time in trying to distinguish reality from fiction.

For the most part, Dunham’s films have been loosely based around her real life. In an interview with Filmmaker Magazine, Dunham was asked what she has to contend with in making such autobiographical movies. She shares, “people judging you. If people don’t like this movie, then it’s possibly because they don’t like ME. That had never occurred to me before. I was thinking about I Am A Sex Addict by Caveh Zahedi, and that movie’s amazing because even though he does such hate-able things in it I still find him pretty charming. And he doesn’t even change his name, so he’s really going balls to the wall with that one. I hope that there’s something universal about this. Like I was hoping it went beyond just my experience”. Dunham's main strength is her ability to make movies that people actually identitify with and this is why "Tiny furnitures" did so well at SXSW this year. We look forward to seeing Dunham's next SXSW submission on it hitting the big screen.
