Swide's art crushes of 2009

Posted Dec 8, 2009

Although we could argue that gossip is an art form we also paid attention to some of the more traditional artists over the year, with a slight penchant for the controversial (sometimes) and the thought-provoking (always).

The one to fear: Terence Koh

He's none other the bad boy of the art world after all! Through his site this "asian punk boy" brings you all the inspiration you need in a mundane yet naughty package.

The one to rediscover: Matthew Barney

This year brought us "Ancient Evenings", or when the Egyptian myth of rebirth meets the best (or is that worst?) of our industrial age. Maybe not as visually agressive as some of his Cremaster work but strong stuff nonetheless!

The one to covet: Takashi Murakami

2009 brought us Murakami's Inochi dolls: another must-have a few years after the massive success of the Kaikai Kiki smiling flowers that enchanted Paris and the world at the Fondation Cartier.

The one to watch: Eugenio Merino

Young, Spanish, controversial, ready to shake the world at the 2010 Shangai Biennale. A revisitation of the North / South dynamics through an ironic reassignment of the roles: Bart Simpson is a starving African kid, the Dalai Lama an enthusiastic gunman and Bin Laden caught the saturday night fever... Capitalism has never been so fun to despise!

The one to learn from : Amie Dickie

A fascinatingly fresh look at fashion: neither glorifying nor mocking it Dickie offers the world a very personal interpretation of an industry she's had a love/hate relationship with for most of her life. Proving there is more to fashion than talks of hemlines and trouser shapes.
